As continues to grow in Southern Ontario, we are excited to announce the launch of and proud to welcome Heather Van Patter as the new City Manager.

With it's beautiful riverfront views and range of small, unique businesses, we know will take off in the community just south of Kitchener-Waterloo.

Heather grew up in Ontario then moved west to attend the University of Calgary and train at the National badminton training centre located there. She incorporated her first business in Mexico while completing her Bachelor of Commerce degree and signed the lease on her first restaurant location before graduation.

She lived in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for ten years, owning and operating several restaurants as well as a couple of boutiques, a car rental agency and a franchised ice cream shop. During this time Heather did a lot of consulting for start-up and troubled local businesses. This opened the door to consulting work in Texas and Florida as well as two more restaurants in the U.S.

Heather returned to Canada when her daughter was entering kindergarten. She says she thought it was best to be close to family but she truly had to start all over again. After five years of working in Sales and Marketing for a retirement community, Heather could no longer deny her entrepreneurial drive and started looking for something new.

"When I came across the ShopCity concept it was so exciting to find something that fit so entirely with my love for small, local businesses and desire to help them succeed," said Heather Van Patter, City Manager. I immediately thought of my cousin, Heather Faulkner, who shares this passion and asked her to join me."

Together, the cousins, along with Heather's husband Jason Faulkner, are perfectly prepped to bring the Shop Local Movement to Cambridge, Ontario.

"With her background in business, world experience and love of local, Heather brings the perfect set of skills to the table as she sets out on her new venture with," said founder and CEO Colin Pape. "The two Heathers and Jason will serve as dynamic leaders for the Shop Local Movement in Cambridge."

My passion for local business is great, I have chaired Chamber of Commerce committees, charity golf tournaments, volunteered and supported in many ways over the years with the goal of combining my life, my work and my community every day. I had that in Mexico, Texas and Florida and I have now found the perfect way to have it here in Cambridge. is now the gateway for me to meet all of my goals while helping this community and supporting the independent business owners who are brave enough to forge out on their own.
